MOUNT VERNON — The Ohio Academy of Science has announced that Mount Vernon High School and MVHS science instructor Bonnie Schutte will receive Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Youth Science Opportunities for the 2009-10 school year from Gov. Ted Strickland and the Ohio Department of Education.

Schools and teachers are selected by the Ohio Academy of Science for stimulating student scientific research and extending science education opportunities beyond traditional classroom activities with events such as science fairs and other science-related learning activities.

“Receiving a Governor’s Award for Excellence,” said Lynn Elfner, CEO of the Ohio Academy of Science, “sends a clear signal that these schools, and these teachers, value student-oriented education. ... Whole new worlds of opportunities open up to students when they complete research or technological design projects.”
