HOWARD — A 10-year-old boy was killed after being struck by a falling tree on Wednesday evening.

Medics from the Eastern Knox County Joint Fire District responded to a Flack Road residence following a 9-1-1 call reporting a tree had fallen on the juvenile. The call came in at 5:33 p.m., according to Knox County Sheriff David Barber.

Upon arrival, medics discovered an unresponsive Ervin Yoder in the woods north of the residence. Yoder was pronounced dead at the scene by Knox County Coroner Jennifer Ogle.

Barber said Yoder and his two younger brothers were playing in the woods when a large dead tree they were playing around fell, striking Ervin.

Following the investigation, Barber called the child’s death a “tragic accident.”
