MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Commissioners met Monday afternoon with Kim Horn, director of the county board of elections, and board member Carol Sue Owens to hear a request for funds. Horn explained how the board of elections experienced a busy year which included some extra expenses.
Special elections took place in February and August. Money from these elections gets paid to the general fund and is not refunded to the board of elections. Horn said that on even number years like 2010, they can charge back for the cost of ballots and advertising only.
Another unexpected cost has been for the needed replacement of a server and workstations. This also included the cost of Perry Corp. for reinstalling software for scanning.
With many people now voting absentee ahead of the election, printing costs have risen dramatically. Horn reported that to date more than 4,200 absentee ballots have been received.
