Not the place for leaves

A number of Mount Vernon residents are raking their leaves out onto the streets in violation a city code. This big pile is one of several on East Vine Street. A city ordinance requires residents to rake their leaves to the curb, but not out into the street. City workers are expected to begin picking up leaves along city streets on Nov. 1. For those wishing to dispose of their leaves earlier than that, the loose leaf drop-off area is open at the city street garage at 1 Cougar Drive. It is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.  (Virgil Shipley)
