Cornfield catches fire

Fredericktown Community Volunteer Fire District firefighters confined this cornfield fire to one-half an acre on Ohio 95, a mile northeast of Fredericktown Monday afternoon. Fire Chief Scott Mast said the property owner Dave Freisch started a trash fire and sparks were blown onto the field. Crews were on station when the call came in at 4:11 p.m. and were on the scene in five minutes preventing the fire from spreading into standing corn only 30 feet away.  (Virgil Shipley)

Fire damages two apartments

A late morning fire on Monday did extensive damage to two apartments at 205 Shirley Ave. in Mount Vernon. It was unclear in which apartment the fire started but damage was done to apartments B and C. No one was hurt in the fire.  (George Breithaupt)
