MOUNT VERNON — The general election is over and results have been tallied. The local results of the mock election sponsored by the Youth Leadership Initiative have also been tabulated and mirrored the general vote.
Students in every social studies class and every 11th-grade homeroom at Mount Vernon High School in October mock voted for Ohio governor, a candidate for Ohio U.S. House of Representatives District 18 and candidates for an Ohio U.S. Senate seat.
John Kasich won the youth vote for governor with 46.18 percent of the vote, beating incumbent Ted Strickland, who received 38.66 percent of the votes.
Incumbent District 18 Rep. Zack Space, with 45.80 percent, narrowly edged out challenger Bob Gibbs, who garnered 45.23 percent of the youth vote.
Rob Portman was the students’ choice for U.S. Senator. He got 42.70 percent of the youth vote compared to Lee Fisher’s 38.39 percent.
