MOUNT VERNON — Despite suffering from spina bifida since birth, 39-year-old Heather Frary tries not to let it get her down. She maintains a pleasant and cheerful outlook and interacts with staff and fellow residents of Whispering Hills Care Center.
“Heather really makes it a home for everyone,” one staff member said.
“This place would be very empty without her,” agreed Emily Wise, an employee of Whispering Hills.
That feeling is mutual. “Living at Whispering Hills is wonderful,” said Frary. “I have a lot of friends, nice aides and nice nurses who make it a nice place to live, and especially one super, super nice nurse, Tracy Green.”
Her four best friends are Ruthie, Russell, Allen and Jeff and they fill their days with activities such as bingo, dice grab bag and going out to eat. “On Wednesdays,” Frary said, “we go up to the therapy room and cook.”
Frary and her friends keep up with the news and current events, and attend church services held at Whispering Hills. Frary likes to sing; her favorite hymn is “The Old Rugged Cross.” She likes country music and her favorite color is red. Her favorite soap opera is “The Young and Restless.” She also likes “Dukes of Hazard” and her favorite cartoon is “Dora the Explorer.”
