  • Two area hunters shot on first day of deer season

MOUNT VERNON — Two accidental shootings were reported Monday during the first day of the 2010 deer-gun season, according to Mike Miller of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.

The first reported incident involved a 19-year-old Centerburg-area man who sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his foot. The man was then transported to a Columbus hospital.

The second was a 50-year-old Sheffield-area man who was hunting along Anderson Run Road near the Licking-Knox County line when he accidentally shot himself in the thigh with a handgun. He was later transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville.

A property damage incident was reported on Tuesday, where a house near Bladensburg was allegedly damaged by gunfire.

No other information was available at press time. All incidents are currently under investigation.
