MOUNT VERNON — Work is continuing on the demolished former Kresge building in downtown Mount Vernon.

South Main Street fire destroys building

Property owner John Montenery said loads of gravel have been brought in to provide a ramp to allow equipment access for demolition and excavation procedures. Structural engineers will be on site today and Friday to determine if a retaining wall is necessary to be erected up against Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Buchwald Center.

Once this process is complete, Montenery said, the underground section of the old Kresge building which remains open will be filled in with compatible soil.

Montenery said that plans are being pursued to utilize this space as a public ice skating rink over the winter months. Once the hole is completely filled, a plastic liner will cover the fill dirt and be flooded with water to create a large open area for ice skating. Plans are currently in the preliminary stages with more details yet to be worked out.

Future plans for the property are still undecided, according to Montenery.
