Head on into a tree
Loretta Griffith, 60, Walhonding, escaped without serious injury in a crash on Monday at 2:30 p.m. on U.S. 36, east of Millwood. She told the Ohio State Highway Patrol she swerved to miss a deer when her pickup left the road. Trooper Garic Warner, looking over the pickup, charged her with failure to control. She was taken to Knox Community Hospital for treatment by the Eastern Knox County Joint Fire District. (Virgil Shipley)


Cleanup work continues
Work is nearly complete on the demolition and cleanup of the property at 201 S. Main St. A fire destroyed the former Kresge building on Oct. 25. Plans are being made to utilize the property as a public ice skating rink this winter. (Virgil Shipley)

Shopping cart derby racers set
The eighth annual Food for the Hungry Shopping Cart Derby will start at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday. Teams from Time Warner Cable, Mount Vernon News, WNZR and WMVO/Eagle 93.7 will start from opposite ends of the city and push a shopping cart toward the Public Square, collecting food and cash for Food for the Hungry.
