  • Threats at school being investigated

  • December 8, 2010 11:18 am EST

MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon Police Chief Michael K. Merrilees has confirmed his agency is investigating a report of threats by a Mount Vernon High school student.

“What we have here is a touchy situation involving school kids,” Merrilees said. “We have one student that has threatened one other student. We obviously take it very seriously and have it under investigation. Any threat is taken seriously.”

Merrilees said it was not a widespread threat and there was no list of targets. Because the incident is still under investigation, Merrilees would not elaborate on any details of what has been found in the investigation.

This is more than somebody just letting off steam,” Merrilees added. “It’s serious enough to merit a full investigation. We are making sure the school is aware of it and steps are taken that it doesn’t get worse. Both kids and both parents have been notified and the situation seems to be under control.”

Calls to Mount Vernon school officials were not returned as of press time.
