Hoffman’s indictments allege he murdered Tina Herrmann, Stephanie Sprang and Kody Maynard on Nov. 10. Charges of rape of Herrmann’s 13-year-old daughter, aggravated burglary and abuse of a corpse were also filed.
Knox County Prosecutor John Thatcher stated the indictments do not include a death penalty specification in accordance with the wishes of the victims’ families.
Sprang’s father, Stephen Thompson, spoke briefly with the News for the first time on Tuesday afternoon.
“We don’t want to say anything that might affect the outcome of the arraignment,” said Thompson in regard to Thatcher’s statement regarding the death penalty. “We want to see [Hoffman] get everything he deserves.”
Tracy Herrmann, wife of Tina Herrmann’s brother, Jason, was reached on Tuesday afternoon but would not comment on the decision to not seek the death penalty. As of press time, Jason Herrmann had not returned the message seeking comment. Attempts made to contact other members of Herrmann’s family were unsuccessful.
Hoffman’s arraignment is scheduled for Thursday. At which time, Thatcher is expected to release further details regarding the absence of the death penalty specification.
