MOUNT VERNON — Frank Kirk has only been donating blood for two years but it paid off for him in an unexpected way. Kirk won a trip to the 2011 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

“This contest was run by the Central Ohio Blood Region,” said Kelly Brenneman, director of the Knox County Chapter of the American Red Cross. “It’s a large group of counties — I believe it’s 17 or 18 counties — and I was just telling Frank earlier we are thrilled to death. For the longest time we haven’t had a lot of winners in Knox County.”

Brenneman said the county had a winner of OSU football tickets earlier, in addition to the Sugar Bowl tickets. Anyone giving blood to the Red Cross is automatically entered in the drawings.
