MOUNT VERNON — Erica Colopy received a four-year prison term this morning in Knox County Common Pleas Court.

Judge Otho Eyster sentenced Colopy to the prison term after she was found guilty in a trial on Dec. 16 of child endangering, a felony in the third degree. Colopy had also been charged with felonious assault and involuntary manslaughter, in which she was found not guilty. These charges came after 4-year-old Donavon Poole died after falling down a stairway while in Colopy’s care in October 2009.

Sarah Gordon, Donavon’s mother, read a statement prior to the sentencing, stating “I have lost the opportunity to watch my son grow up. As a result of her [Colopy’s] actions and lack of remorse, I feel she should go to prison.”

In addition to the four-year prison sentence, Colopy will also be under three years of post-release control.

Representing Colopy at the sentencing was attorney James Giles who stated he does plan to file an appeal.
