MOUNT VERNON — Michael P. Hillier has filed his petition as a candidate for re-election to Mount Vernon City Council at large as a member of the Republican Party.

As a third-term council member, Hillier serves as chairman of the Planning and Zoning Committee for council and as the city representative on Knox County Regional Planning.

“Serving as chair, I see the importance of proper planning for the city of Mount Vernon,” said Hillier. “Not only what the administration desires, but also what the citizens of Mount Vernon feel we need. I take the time to listen to the people and take their information with me to the planning commission meetings held with the administration.”

Hillier’s involvement with the local community includes promotion chairman for the Heritage Centre Association and Leadership Knox steering committee member for the Knox County Chamber of Commerce.

“Being involved with these two organizations keeps me in touch with downtown business owners and other community partners who are involved with the growth and support of downtown Mount Vernon,” said Hillier.

Hillier stated he has seen several improvements made in the city since he has been on council. For example, “Many dilapidated building issues have been addressed but there are more to take care of. I feel that having input in Dilapidated Buildings, Planning Commission and the Heritage Centre meetings are very important to bringing more improvements to the city,” he said.

“Mount Vernon is a great place to live. If there are going to be changes made, you have to be involved,” Hillier said. “This involvement means listening to the people it affects the most. I feel having experience on City Council is what it will take to address upcoming issues we may be faced with in the future.”

A lifelong resident of Knox County, Hillier resides at 215 E. Sugar St. with his wife, Terri. Their son, Justin, is a graduate of Miami University and resides in Oxford with his wife and son.
