APPLE VALLEY — Like the rest of the county, Apple Valley has taken a hit due to all the rain and melting snow. Besides the headaches caused by flooding in yards and basements, Apple Valley Drive on the north end off Danville-Amity Road was closed on Monday.

Jeff Harmer, Apple Valley Property Owners Association general manager, said the closure was due to some erosion around culverts close to the marina and may remain in effect for some time.
Alternate routes are advised.
“If you usually come in the back entrance and want to go to the east,” Harmer said, “you’re going to have to stay on Danville-Amity Road to King Road. There are several accesses off King Road.
“People will just have to be patient,” he continued. “The county is assessing the situation and trying to determine the magnitude of the erosion. They will get it opened up as quickly as they can.”
Knox County Engineer Jim Henry said the area involves multiple culvert pipes that serve as an inlet to the lake by the Little Jelloway.
“We have Apple Valley Drive closed there because we can’t tell how badly the road is undermined. We are trying to make some repairs on the upstream side, the north side of the road. We are finding that there is some damage underneath, and we are going to have to wait until the water recedes a little bit before we can get a better look at it.”
That culvert area had already been scheduled by the county for replacement this year. However, Henry said, the grant money for that replacement doesn’t become available until July 1.
“What I am likely to do,” he said, “is contact the Ohio Public Works Commission and ask them if it might be a candidate for emergency grant funding. Then we could jump on it right away.”
