MARTINSBURG — Fire destroyed part of a barn and some farm machinery on Ohio 586 south of Martinsburg on Saturday morning.

The Bladensburg Fire Department was called to the Ed Wolfe property at 3:30 a.m. Capt. Justin Baker said when his department arrived about half of the 40-by-80-foot pole barn was on fire.

He said they pulled onto the property and were able to stop the spread of the fire. The part of the barn that was on fire housed a pickup truck that was destroyed, a tractor which has significant damage and several round bales of hay that were burned. There is other machinery and hay in the remainder of the barn

The burning hay bales were pulled from the barn and torn apart to extinguish the fire. Baker said they think a defective battery charger may have caused the fire because the blaze started in that area.

Mutual aid came from Utica with an engine and tanker. Mud, ash and water caused a real mess in fighting the fire and the cleanup. Baker said firefighters did not clear the scene until 8 a.m.
