The council’s Pork Queen for 2011 was named. She is Devani Adam, daughter of Rochelle and Alan Adam of Howard.
A junior at Newark Catholic High School, she is a member of the National Honor Society with awards in math and science. She plays varsity softball and basketball and is a student council member with activities in several clubs. She is a nine-year 4-H member and participates in a variety of 4-H activities.
Adam gave a brief talk on the pork industry with emphasis on the nutritional value of pork such as high quality protein, iron and B vitamins. She said “maybe pigs should be considered man’s best friend.” She pointed out the products from pigs are heart valves surgically implanted in humans to replace diseased valves; bone and skin to make glue; leather for gloves, shoes, footballs; and hair for artists brushes.
“The next time you watch a football game thank pigs for the “pigskin,” I really think pigs are man’s best friends.”
