MOUNT VERNON — Knox County Career Center’s CBI-10 Knowledge Bowl team won the regional junior division contest March 10, and will advance to the state meet in April.
Coached by Bob Geiger, team members include Miranda Snow, Emma Reed, team captain Johnathan Mundy, Tammy Schivley, Makayla Montgomery, Nick Gaumer, Nic Featheringham, Dani Keen, Erica Baumgartner, Abbey Rodgers and Brett Kennedy.
During the Knowledge Bowl competition, the teams faced off to answer questions in a dozen categories including history, math, health, government, sports and English. The KCCC team prepares by dividing most of the categories and becoming “specialists” in certain areas.
Geiger said he is proud of how the team did, and added that team members are excited about the win.
“I knew we were going to be competitive,” he said. “I was really happy with how they worked together. We spent a lot more time preparing for the Ohio Graduation Tests this year than preparing for the Knowledge Bowl, so it was a pleasant surprise.”
Preparing for the Knowledge Bowl also helps students prepare for the Ohio Graduation Test — 40 percent of the questions are directly related to the OGT.
“The OGT is a lot more writing,” said Geiger, “but there are some facts that match up and help the kids out a lot. More than anything, though, Knowledge Bowl puts the students in a pressure situation and helps them learn to make decisions and deal with a tough situation where they have to decide something fairly quickly. It’s a challenge and they learn to overcome it. It’s good for kids this age because those are life skills.”
