MOUNT VERNON — Options are in abundance for those wishing to do their own recycling in Knox County. Recycling trailers are placed in numerous locations for residents in the various townships. The Knox County Recycling Center is open to accept donations as well. But those not wanting to venture outside their home have another option to do some recycling.

The City of Mount Vernon contracts with local trash haulers and utilizes a non-subscription plan with most haulers adding on a small monthly fee for recycling. Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis stated that in order to stay in compliance with EPA regulations, there must be a solid waste plan in place with 90 percent accessibility in the community. Licensing of local trash haulers was previously managed by the Knox County Health Department, but this licensing may soon be shifting to the City of Mount Vernon.
