DANVILLE — Helen Kaylor has seen her share of Girl Scout activities over the past 58 years. A former Girl Scout troop leader for 20 years, Kaylor has remained active in numerous functions with the Heart of Ohio Girl Scout Council since 1953, with the latest being the “Dazzling Desserts, Recipes for Success” fundraiser on March 19 at the Holiday Inn in Mansfield. Attending the event with Kaylor were 13 of her former Girl Scout troop members from Troop 439 in Danville.

“They look forward to it,” said Kaylor. “They just keep wanting to go back.”

The Dazzling Desserts event is a fundraiser where local chefs create recipes using Girl Scout cookies as a base item in the recipe. Those attending sample the recipes and vote for their favorites. Dinner then takes place followed by a silent auction, live auction and dessert auction, with all proceeds benefiting the Heart of Ohio Girl Scout Council, which includes troops from Knox County.

“It’s a lot different than it used to be,” laughed Kaylor, explaining Girl Scout cookies used to cost 50 cents per box. “And you got more cookies then, too.”

One of the chefs creating a recipe entry was Chuck Carey, who has been the Director of Food and Nutrition at Knox Community Hospital for two and a half years and participated in Dazzling Desserts for the second straight year.

“There were a lot of good desserts this year,” said Carey. “Thin Mints seemed to be the main theme in this year’s desserts. Carey’s creation was Tagalongs Cream Banana Tart. (See recipe below.) He said he liked the combination of chocolate and bananas for this entry.
