CENTERBURG — The Centerburg Village Council voted Monday night to move forward and approve legislation that would create Centerburg Township.
According to the ordinance, the purpose behind breaking out of Hilliar Township is because village residents pay taxes to the township, but “the citizenry of the Village of Centerburg are receiving no benefits from the use of said taxes to Hilliar Township.”
Kyle Stroh, village solicitor, said he is working on details to an agreement with the township regarding the cemetery and park.
Some debate took place prior to the passage of legislation regarding whether or not council should review those details before voting on the measure.
“We will be giving the township more time to react if we pass tonight,” said council member Dave Beck. “[Park and cemetery details] won’t change legislation.”
Council member Jerry Hess agreed.
“We are not hiding anything from [the township],” Hess said. “Maybe it is best to pass legislation and work out the details down the road.”
