Sparks fly at home

A huge electrical arc jumped from a partially severed main service line into this house at 7 W. Lamartine St. at 9:45 Monday morning. A construction accident cut the line that produced periodic arcs of electricity and showers of sparks. A small fire on the exterior of the house was controlled by the Mount Vernon Fire Department. After a delayed response, AEP shut off the power.  (Virgil Shipley)

Dry Creek not so dry

Dry Creek that flows along U.S. 36 just west of Mount Liberty was nearly overflowing its banks Monday evening following a day of continuous rain in Knox County.  (Virgil Shipley)

Corner of Grohe building crumbles

A sizeable amount of the wall of the old Grohe building fell to the sidewalk on North Main Street overnight. Demolition is to start soon on this building.  (Virgil Shipley)

It’s official: Naples now Mount Vernon head coach

Anthony Naples has been approved by the school board to be the next Mount Vernon High School football coach.  (Pam Schehl)

Fire alarm in the rain

A faulty sensor in the air handling system triggered the fire alarm at the Mount Vernon Middle School on Monday afternoon, according to Mount Vernon Fire Department Assistant Chief Chris Menapace. The 1,000 students were quickly moved to the nearby high school. Many students are pictured returning through a downpour.  (Virgil Shipley)
