DANVILLE — The state of the district finances was one of the topics discussed at Monday’s meeting of the Danville Board of Education. Treasurer Mary Payne said there are still uncertainties with regard to the state budget and SB 5 legislation. She summed up the current financial situation by saying, “so far, so good.”

The future situation is not so rosy, and board president Charles Bratton said they will be looking at ways to avoid a deficit. The board on Monday did increase the transportation fee from $25 to $50, and will be looking at cost containment measures such as eliminating some staff positions, freezing salaries and reducing the amount spent on supplies by 10 percent. Details on the proposed cuts, which have been withheld pending notification of the affected employees, are expected to be available after the board takes formal action at the May board meeting.

During the public participation portion of the meeting, Louie Mickley, president of the Summer Softball League, talked about improvements to the softball fields. He said the league would like to install a flagpole at the upper field, improve and enlarge the concession stand at the lower field and install drainage pipe around the lower field.
