MOUNT VERNON — The railroad crossing on Sycamore Road at Hunt Station has been marked to receive an upgrade. However, it could take some time to procure funding.

This announcement comes after representatives from the Ohio Rail Development Commission and Public Utilities Commission of Ohio met at the site with Chris Horton, office superintendent of the Knox County Highway Department, and recommended the installation of flashing lights and roadway gates.

A diagnostic review was performed on March 4 after the location was identified for review by a hazard index which helps to rate the level of risk at the crossing.

“Our plan is that this upgrade will take place,” said Cathy Stout, grade crossing safety representative with the ORDC. “Federal funding needs to be secured before the project can begin.” Funding for these projects is authorized through ORDC using federal highway safety funds.

“This crossing is rather dangerous. There is limited visibility,” said Horton. “I’m all for it (upgrade).”

Once funding for the project is in place, Stout expects a 12- to 18-month period before the upgrade takes place.
