MOUNT VERNON — A resolution declaring Sunday, May 1 as Law Day in Knox County was adopted by the Knox County Board of Commissioners on Monday morning. The commissioners were addressed by Andrew Norcross, Richard Wilson and Hannah Oliver, all members of Explorer Post No. 315, with a proposal to adopt this resolution.

Law Day was established in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower and reaffirmed by Congress in a joint resolution in 1961. With the theme of Law Day 2011 being “The Legacy of John Adams: From Boston to Guantanamo,” Law Day “fosters understanding of the historical and contemporary role of lawyers in defending the principal of due process and the right of the accused, and renews our understanding of and appreciation for the fundamental principle of the rule of law.”

Norcross shared information on how John Adams worked at providing legal representation for the British soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Oliver spoke on President George W. Bush challenging the detentions of those held at Guantanamo Bay.
