MOUNT VERNON — Operations at the Knox County Recycling Center will officially change hands on Sunday from Sims Bros. Inc. to Rumpke Waste and Recycling. Sims Bros. has chosen not to renew its contract for the facility, which operates in cooperation with the Delaware-Knox-Marion-Morrow Solid Waste District.

“They indicated it was just no longer profitable for them,” said Knox County Commissioner Allen Stockberger after speaking with officials from Sims Bros. Stockberger explained that the Recycling Center was opened in 2000 and was then operated by the county before a five-year contract was signed with Sims Bros.

With the transition planned to take place officially on May 1, Rumpke has already been working hard on making this transition a smooth process. “We’ve got to educate, and we’ve got to make recycling accessible,” said Stephen Sargent, director of Rumpke Recycling.
