MOUNT VERNON — One volunteer with the Knox County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Tom Tenney, is on his way to help with disaster relief in the storm-struck south.

Knox County Red Cross Executive Director Kelly Brenneman said Tenney left at 5 a.m. Friday to meet up with Licking County personnel and drive the Licking County emergency rescue vehicle to a disaster site.

“We are very proud of him,” said Brenneman.

Red Cross chapters don’t automatically send swarms of volunteers to a site, Brenneman said. “At this time, we’ve just been asked for one volunteer. The American Red Cross evaluates the need right away, then gets that need together and determines how many volunteers are required. That can, of course, change once they are on site.”
