  • Many collectibles — some promotional items —have gathered dust on the shelves of the Truex Marathon Station in Danville.
  • The shelves inside the small service station remain filled with collectibles and automotive repair items Don Truex and his father, Pat, have accumulated through the years.
  • “They came down a lot easier than they went up,” said Richard Burch while taking down the Christmas lights from the tall pine tree on Mount Vernon’s Public Square, Thursday morning. Burch used a long pole to lift the 1,000-foot long string of lights off the branches while Heritage Centre Association President Corby Wise rolled them onto a spool.

  • A sizeable amount of the wall of the old Grohe building fell to the sidewalk on North Main Street overnight. Demolition is to start soon on this building.
  • Anthony Naples has been approved by the school board to be the next Mount Vernon High School football coach.
  • A faulty sensor in the air handling system triggered the fire alarm at the Mount Vernon Middle School on Monday afternoon, according to Mount Vernon Fire Department Assistant Chief Chris Menapace. The 1,000 students were quickly moved to the nearby high school. Many students are pictured returning through a downpour.
  • Construction began on the Richards Street bridge in Danville on Monday. The street will  remain closed for approximately three months as work is completed on the bridge near the Kokosing Gap Trail.

  • It was quite a sight, this heating and cooling unit dangling in the air above downtown Mount Vernon, Friday morning. It was a 12,600-pound heating and air conditioning unit being placed on the roof of Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s new school of nursing building. The facility is beside the Buchwald Center that had to be renovated after the Kresge building fire last fall.
  • The piers on the viaduct were cleared of debris Friday morning. A city street department crew cut the limbs and branches and pushed them off into the Kokosing River to float away.
  • Danville’s Olivia Rice slides in safe at home as Fredericktown catcher Jess Gable can’t make the tag during Friday’s game. The Blue Devils won, 10-3.
  • Centerburg’s Drew Osborne, of the North All-Stars, hits a bucket in the first half of Friday’s District 11 All-Star Game at Granville. Osborne finished with 19 points.

  • Fire that started from an unknown source destroyed this tractor Tuesday morning. Owned by Michael Shipley of Utica, it was being driven on Ohio 661 just south of Butcher Road by his employee, Luke Simons, when the fire started. The Homer Fire Department responded to the call at 9:28 a.m. with mutual aid from the Mount Vernon Fire Department. Ohio 661 was closed for 90 minutes.

  • The “yellow” house in Danville is currently being renovated to house The Sanctuary. Rehabilitation of the house for needed space and handicap accessibility is possible through community donations and a grant from the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon and Knox County.
  • Malaya Sherman, 7, won first place at National Champion status at the American Cheer Power national cheerleading competitions at the Columbus Convention Center on April 2. Malaya, a student at Pleasant Street Elementary, was accompanied by her coach, Alice Dunfee. Malaya’s parents are Gerald and Melissa Sherman.

  • Columbia Elementary School’s fifth-grade class was honored in 2010 for its efforts to send World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., on a Honor Flight.   • Mount Vernon pinch-hitter Ashton Bogo smacks a two-run RBI single in the seventh inning that tied up Friday’s game against Big Walnut. The Yellow Jackets went on to win, 8-7.
  • Mount Vernon softball pitcher Brittany Roden allowed five runs in the first inning of Friday’s game against Big Walnut. However, she settled down and managed to allow only four more baserunners to earn the win.

  • The biannual recycling drive at the Mount Vernon News continues to draw a large number of environmentally conscious readers to recycle newspapers and magazines. Unloading recyclable materials for News customers are, from left, Vickie Gibson, Leroy Nungester and Mike McNichols. Two Dumpsters, provided by Milliron Recycling, were filled during the four-hour event. Nearly 400 readers participated in the event.
  • A garden art display was one of many exhibits at the Earth Day Festival held Sunday at Kenyon College.
  • Oil collected on Saturday at a collapsed bridge downstream from the former Shultz farm on Jericho Road. Approximately 250 gallons of oil leaked from a storage tank due to a faulty valve. A representative from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is expected to be on site today.

  • Jerry Brown, a specialist with A&B Sanitation of Columbus, uses a vacuum to remove what the EPA said was bacteria from the small creek that runs through Greer along Jericho Road. The cleanup is a result of an oil leak Friday afternoon from a storage tank on the James Landoll farm. Jimmy Landoll, son of James Landoll, said Knox County Wildlife Officer Mike Miller told him their was no environmental damage along the stream.

  • A Knox County Highway Department crew made quick work of putting in a new culvert pipe on Range Line Road, Monday morning. Backhoe driver Randy Harris drops gravel to fill over the pipe while Mike Smithhisler, left, and Jeff Durbin, foreman, far right, spread the gravel. The crew had the 30-inch hard plastic pipe covered by noon. It replaced a rusted galvanized steel pipe.

  • The top of the reactor head at the Braidwood nuclear plant. Jeff Ulery of Mount Vernon welded the safety pipes at the top of the reactor head.
  • The area where the fuel rods would be hung before lowering them into the reactor.
  • The diesel generator at Braidwood that would come on to provide emergency power. The generator was built by Cooper-Bessemer (now Rolls-Royce). Ulery said it could be up and running in seconds if emergency power was needed.

  • George Robertson, 40, Mount Vernon, escaped with minor injuries when his car hit this tree Tuesday at 10:20 a.m. on Ohio 661, just north of Miller Road. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Robertson started to pass a car driven by Charles Martin, 70, Uniontown, who turned left without signaling. Robertson swerved to avoid the crash but his car was bumped to the left and went off the road into the tree.
  • Mount Vernon junior Johnson Cochrane competed in the YMCA national swimming championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., earlier this month. He finished 44th in the nation in the 100-yard breaststroke.

  • The swollen, swiftly flowing Kokosing River was over its banks Wednesday from rain the past few days. Water was over Lower Gambier Road at right and the road was closed to traffic for a few hours Wednesday.

  • This truck ran off Ohio 661 just north of Brandon about 2:40 a.m. today. When it rolled over, it struck and broke the utility pole at right, which fell across the driveway of the Danny Geiger home.   • Hope Now has acquired this truck to pick up and deliver durable goods for needy families. The vehicle was purchased, in part, by a grant from The Community Foundation of Mount Vernon and Knox County. Hope Now receives and distributes durable goods for needy families from a newly leased 3,200-square-foot warehouse at 117 Mount Vernon Ave. in Essup Park. Currently they are serving about 60 families each month.
  • Easter Sunday commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter is celebrated in many ways by families both religiously and traditionally. From Easter services to  Easter egg hunts and baskets filled with candies and Peeps, the holiday is a combination of both aspects. Baby chicks, like these at TSC, along with lambs, are often connect with Easter and its promise of rebirth.
  • The tractor-trailer that rolled off Ohio 661 just north of Brandon early Friday morning was unloaded of its cargo later on Friday. This crew from Blubaugh Body and Frame used a fork lift to remove the 37,000 pounds of paper rolls that were headed for the International Paper Co. manufacturing facility in Mount Vernon. From left are Alfred Kolasky, Todd Carpenter, and on the fork lift general manager Louie Blubaugh. Ohio 661 was closed for about four hours while the wreck was cleared.
