FALLSBURG — For two days, five handicapped or disabled military veterans were treated to guided turkey hunts in the hills and valleys north of Fallsburg. It’s beautiful country and there are plenty of birds in the area, but none came close enough to the hunters’ blinds for a shot.

Despite the lack of the success, every one of the hunters said they had a great time, as they were out enjoying a sport they otherwise might have little chance to pursue.

The hunt was provided by America’s Freedom Lodge, an organization dedicated to providing outdoor recreation activities for America’s veterans. For the past five years, it has provided free guided deer and turkey hunts for disabled or handicapped hunters.

“It was enjoyable. It’s nice to be outdoors,” said Richard Wewetzer of Pataskala. “I was here the last two springs and I’ll be back next spring. This is a great opportunity. I wouldn’t be turkey hunting at all if not for this.”
