MOUNT VERNON — Knox County has grown by more than 6,000 residents since 2000 and Mount Vernon has grown by more than 2,500, according to figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau this spring.

Knox County now has 60,921 residents, compared to 54,500 in 2000, and Mount Vernon’s population is 16,990, up from 14,375.

Among the incorporated villages in the county, the portion of Utica in Knox County recorded the largest percentage increase — 700 percent — but that is deceptive because it is a jump from only two to 16. Otherwise, the largest percentage increase among the incorporated villages came in Martinsburg. It grew by 28.1 percent, but that is only a jump of 52, from 185 to 237.
