MOUNT VERNON — “Why doesn’t the government do something?” is a question often heard from people paying high gasoline prices at the pump while at the same time reading about oil companies reaping record profits.

Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown has introduced two bills he claims will attack that problem.

In his weekly telephone news conference Wednesday, the Democrat explained his reasoning behind the bills and took some shots at expected Republican opposition.

One bill targets price manipulation by OPEC countries, the other ends tax loopholes and subsidies for big oil companies and applies the money saved to deficit reduction.
