MOUNT VERNON — The following Memorial Day observances will be held in the area:
•Mount Vernon — Mount Vernon’s Memorial Day Parade will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. with the theme “Our Guardians of Freedom & Liberty; May They Rest in Peace.” The parade entries will travel East High Street from Catherine Street to Public Square, where services will follow.
•Mound View Cemetery — Traditional Decoration Day ceremonies will be Monday at Mound View Cemetery approximately 15 minutes after the Mount Vernon Memorial Day Parade and ceremonies.
•Bloomfield Cemetery — Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in Bloomfield Cemetery, County Road 204, Centerburg. Included in the program will be Highland High School Navy Junior ROTC, Highland High School Marching Band and Boy Scouts. The speaker will be Pat Davies.
•Brandon — On Sunday, a parade will form at the park south of Brandon. At 1:30 p.m., the parade will march to the cemetery behind the Methodist Church, where services will be held. Following services in the cemetery, another service will be held in the Brandon Baptist Church with speakers and the McManaway Family Singers.
•Centerburg — On Monday, a parade will form at 10 a.m. at the post office. It will proceed to Eastview Cemetery at 10:40 a.m., where a ceremony will follow at 11. The guest speaker will be Bob Klostermeier, first vice commander Department of Ohio American Legion.
•Danville — Parade will form Monday at the square and march to the Danville Memorial Park at 10 a.m. A service will follow in the park.
•Fredericktown — Assemble Monday at public square at 9:30 a.m.; flag raising at 9:45 a.m. by Boy Scouts; laying of wreath by Mayor Alan Kintner. Parade to Forest Cemetery at 10 a.m. with selection of music by the Fredericktown senior and junior high bands. Remarks by Master of Ceremonies Robert Vernon, commander of Fredericktown Post 500 of the American Legion. George Curry, Knox County Veterans Service commissioner, will give the Memorial Day address.
•Utica — On Monday, the Utica American Legion Post 92 will do a gun salute at several area cemeteries, beginning at Bell Church Cemetery at 7:45 a.m. A service and program will be held at 11 a.m. at the Legion Post 92 with the Utica High School Band, Color Guard and reading of an Honor Roll. Refreshments will be served following the service at the Legion Hall and is open to the public.
Closings announced
MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon News will be closed Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Deadline for obituaries for the May 30 edition will be 2 p.m. Sunday.
The following businesses or offices will also be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day:
•Knox County Department of Job & Family Services, including Workforce Development, Opportunity Knox One Stop Employment and Training, Public Assistance, Child Support Enforcement, and Children and Family Services.
•Knox Metropolitan Housing Authority, including the office handling the CHIP housing rehabilitation activities for the city of Mount Vernon and Knox County.
•Mid-Ohio Transit Authority.
