GAMBIER — Kenyon College graduates received a reminder of how important their liberal arts education is, as well as a lesson in love, during graduation ceremonies Saturday on Samuel Mather Lawn.

Martha Nussbaum, who received an honorary doctor of humane letters, reminded the 418 graduates why their liberal arts education is important in a world that’s growing more toward specialized education.

“The liberal arts education is under assault. It’s rapidly losing its place in the world,” said Nussbaum, a professor of law and ethics at the University of Chicago. “Why should we care if they scrap the liberal arts focus. First, it prepares you for life.
