MOUNT VERNON — Overcoming obstacles, battling low self-esteem and putting the aftermath of bad choices behind them, students at the Knox County Alternative Center celebrated their achievements and were honored by staff members, family, friends and community partners Thursday at the annual awards ceremony.

The awards kicked off with a guitar solo by Isaac Greene as he demonstrated what he learned during guitar lessons as part of the Alternative Center’s afterschool program.
