DANVILLE — Danville-area veterans heard words of thanks for their dedication and their sacrifices at Memorial Day ceremonies Monday morning at Danville Memorial Park.

The Memorial Day ceremony, which followed a parade from the village square, was attended by numerous local residents, including those veterans who still hold a special place in their heart for our country’s freedoms. Gail “Buck” Laughrey, Commander of American Legion Post 650, opened the ceremony by welcoming those attending. As the Danville High School marching band played the national anthem, the American flag was raised by members of Boy Scout Troop 340.

After an invocation given by retired preacher Gene Lilly, a special address for the ceremony was given by Mike Beheler, history teacher at Danville High School. Beheler shared the story of the passing of his father who was a sergeant in the Korean War.
