A rusted out galvanized culvert pipe was replaced on Chapel Church Road north of Danville on Monday. A gravel mixture was tamped around the new plastic pipe then the trench was filled with more gravel and again tamped. Knox County Highway Department bridge foreman Michael Smithhisler is moving gravel around in the trench. Backhoe operator Lynn Morningstar is lining the trench with gravel. On Thompson Road, just east of Apple Valley, an old concrete box culvert, that was breaking up, was replaced with a 60-foot plastic culvert. That job was also completed Monday. A four-inch gas line that ran over the old culvert pipes on Apple Valley Drive at Apple Valley was cut and capped when the new bridge was built. Monday the Wenger Pipe Line Co. of Dalton was boring a 300-foot hole under the stream to reconnect the line. The instrument that Marty Wenger is holding is a sensor to help guide the boring tool. The bridge was slated to open Monday but Knox County Engineer Jim Henry said a correction in the asphalt approach on the east side delayed the opening. Pending completion of that work and completion of the gas line, the tentative opening is Wednesday. (Photo by Virgil Shipley)
