MOUNT VERNON — Measures are being sought to construct a free-standing wall on the north end of Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Buchwald Center on South Main Street. A retaining wall was installed in January to prevent pressure from being placed on the building when a soil/clay mix was poured into the hole left after the former Kresge building was brought down in November 2010 following the destructive fire in October.

“The north wall is not structurally sufficient to be a free-standing wall,” said Jeff Spear, vice president for finance at MVNU, explaining how it was basically designed to lean up against another building. The need to construct a better supportive wall was determined after negotiations between MVNU officials and insurance representatives.
