MOUNT VERNON — As spring rolled into the summer of 1861, residents of Mount Vernon, like people nationwide, were anxious for news.

What’s happening to the boys who have gone off to fight? When will the real fighting start?

At last report the local companies who were part of the 4th Ohio infantry, were at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati learning to be soldiers, disagreeing over the quality of food and wondering when they would move to the front. Finally, on May 28, there was a tidbit of news.
