More than 40 Mount Vernon High School seniors attended a celebratory breakfast Tuesday morning at Pleasant Street Elementary School. The school has a long tradition of serving breakfast to graduating seniors that attended the school. Pictured, from left, are Justin Wilt, Ashley Johnson and Brett Latham. This ditch is on Barnes Road, just southwest of Centerburg. The banks have been mowed, there is no erosion and the ditch is clear. Richard Zellner, 25, Loudonville, was pulling from Millwood Road onto U.S. 62 when the hitch broke and the anhydrous ammonia tank rolled over. The tank was empty causing no danger to the area.PublishedJune 7, 2011 Jim Ferguson spent part of his evening on Monday trying to strain soap bubbles from the fountain on Public Square. He said he was sitting on the square Friday night when he saw three teenagers dump soap into the fountain. He used a small sieve to remove the bubbles, but wasn’t making much progress. A spokesperson for the city parks department said the fountain, and the one located at Riverside Park, are being hit nearly every night. The street is not owned by the city but the administration is trying to work with the out-of-town owners to improve the roadway.PublishedJune 11, 2011 A new bridge on Apple Valley Drive, on the north side of Apple Valley, will open Monday. The bridge replaces six large culvert pipes that carried water from a small stream into Apple Valley lake. A spring flood washed debris against the pipes, which blocked the flow, causing water to partially wash out the edge of the road and berms. Personnel in the Knox County Engineer’s Office decided the pipes were no longer effective and took steps to construct the new bridge.PublishedJune 11, 2011 Nei Guan Chen, 54, Mount Vernon, was taken to Knox Community Hospital with injuries from a crash on Old Delaware Road at the east edge of Mount Vernon, Friday at 5:30 p.m. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said a witness following Chen said he was driving fine then started to swerve. His Ford F-150 van slid off the right side of the road, traveled 140 feet in this deep ditch and slammed into a deep culvert at the entrance to the Green Valley Southern Baptist Church. A gravel mixture was tamped around the new plastic pipe then the trench was filled with more gravel and again tamped. Knox County Highway Department bridge foreman Michael Smithhisler is moving gravel around in the trench. Backhoe operator Lynn Morningstar is lining the trench with gravel. On Thompson Road, just east of Apple Valley, an old concrete box culvert, that was breaking up, was replaced with a 60-foot plastic culvert. That job was also completed Monday.PublishedJune 14, 2011 A four-inch gas line that ran over the old culvert pipes on Apple Valley Drive at Apple Valley was cut and capped when the new bridge was built. Monday the Wenger Pipe Line Co. of Dalton was boring a 300-foot hole under the stream to reconnect the line. The instrument that Marty Wenger is holding is a sensor to help guide the boring tool. The bridge was slated to open Monday but Knox County Engineer Jim Henry said a correction in the asphalt approach on the east side delayed the opening. The building, 40-foot-by-64-foot, is being constructed by Cleary Building Corp., Heath, at a cost of $49,900. An emergency resolution was passed in February by the Knox County Board of Commissioners to move forward with the project after evidence stored at the Mount Vernon City impound lot was destroyed in a fire. Under emergency status, the bid process is circumvented  to allow for acquisition of three estimates. The  estimates must be less than $50,000. According to Knox County Assistant Prosecutor Chip McConville, the intent was to construct the building as soon as possible, but weather conditions prolonged the process.PublishedJune 15, 2011 Purple ribbons have been placed throughout Mount Vernon in recognition of Friday’s Relay for Life event at Yellow Jacket Stadium. It seats the driver and one passenger in tandem. The Pulse was stored outside for 15 years when Hack found it. He has restored it over the six years he has owned it. It is powered by a Honda motorcycle engine. The Ford Explorer veered across and off the left side of the road where it rolled over into an aluminum power pole. Both John and Sharon are listed in fair condition this morning at OSU Medical. Boyce is still investigating the cause of the crash.
