GAMBIER — Jack Esslinger was stunned when he was announced as the 2011 Citizen of the Year at the Gambier Fourth of July celebration Monday.

“I had no clue. I was completely surprised,” Esslinger said. “It’s an honor.”

Esslinger, a carpenter, said it is an honor that “will be hard to live up to,” but that it is especially gratifying to know it comes from people he has come to know as friends, not just customers.

Mayor Kirk Emmert said the selection of Esslinger was the result, as it often is, of letters received from village residents.
