MOUNT VERNON — A car fire and an attempted vehicle arson in the area of Shirley Avenue and James Street are under investigation by the Mount Vernon Police Department.

MVPD Chief Mike Merrilees stated that a car was on fire in this vicinity on Thursday and was put out with a fire extinguisher after police officers responded to the scene.

“A car fire burns very hot and usually doesn’t last very long,” said Merrilees. “The car wasn’t fully engulfed.” The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Another report was received of an attempted arson in the same area, also on Thursday.

No other information is available as Merrilees stated both incidences are still under investigation.
