MOUNT VERNON — This rivalry will draw blood.

No, Mount Vernon’s police and firefighters will not rumble in the street, but the friendly rivalry will fuel the annual “Guns and Hoses” Blood Drive on Thursday in cooperation with the Knox County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

From 1 to 7 p.m., people can go to the fire station at 200 W. Gambier St. and donate blood. Donors will declare whether they’re supporting the police or firefighters. At the end of the day, the winner will receive the “Guns and Hoses” trophy.

Knox County Red Cross Executive Director Kelly Brenneman said the goal for this year’s event is 30 units of blood.
