MOUNT VERNON — Although a transition is under way at the Alcohol and Drug Freedom Center of Knox County, its doors are not closing.

Wendi Fowler, Esq., who serves on the board of directors, said Rick Schlegel is no longer the executive director, although he continues to be employed by the center for the time being.

Fowler said the board has hired an outside consulting firm, Brown Consulting, to serve as interim manager of the Freedom Center.

“I can assure you that the doors are not closing,” Fowler said. “The board has made this decision. It’s a proactive effort. The environment in this area in terms of the funding is getting tougher and tougher in the substance abuse arena. So, it’s a proactive effort on the part of the board to make sure that we are properly positioned for the future.
