HOWARD — The East Knox Board of Education on Wednesday voted to place an additional five-year, 5-mill property tax levy on the November ballot to generate $1.2 million for operating expenses. If approved by the voters, the cost to someone with a home valued at $100,000 would be $153.13 a year.

Board president Renee McDaniel said the $1.2 million will help the district to balance its budget, but is the bare minimum. It will not provide any monetary cushion, and will not allow for the restoration of services, programs and personnel already eliminated in cost-savings moves that reduced expenses by $1.5 million.
