MOUNT VERNON — Officers with the Mount Vernon Police Department had a busy evening on Friday, responding to a variety of calls.

An alarm was sounded from Hunnicut’s Jewelry on South Main Street at 9:09 p.m. Friday. MVPD officers responded to the scene to find a window in the business had been broken. The officers then conversed with youth at Public Square and were given a first name of a suspect, but no suspect has yet been identified. The incident is under investigation.

A call came in from Nancy Ash about a large number of youth loitering outside the Escape Zone on South Main Street. Police officers arrived and dispersed the youth who had gathered. The officers then met with supervisors at the Escape Zone who stated they would like to organize a roundhouse meeting with area business owners to discuss this issue which reportedly has been a recurring problem. No police report was made.

James Anders, 19, Mount Vernon, was arrested Friday evening on a probation violation and was being transported to Knox Community Hospital for medical issues when he became upset, banging his head on the cage inside the cruiser. He was treated at KCH and later taken to the county jail.
