GAMBIER — The family of Pete and Linda Smith was involved in a motor vehicle accident last week while traveling to Colorado for a family vacation. Pete is the athletic director at Kenyon College.

Hank Toutain, dean of students at Kenyon College, has routinely been in contact with the family since the accident. Toutain reported that the family’s recreational vehicle was struck by a semitrailer early on July 10, on Interstate 80 near Kearney, Neb. Serious injuries resulted from the crash, and the family was flown by helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Linda, who was driving the RV, reportedly sustained multiple arm and leg fractures in the accident and has since undergone surgery. Their children, Abbey and Will, were both ejected from the vehicle. Abbey suffered road rash and is doing well while Will is fighting a brain injury with multiple small bleeds, Toutain told the News. He was placed in a medical coma and is reportedly showing small improvements. Pete is said to be OK, just shaken up.

The family is asking for prayers for Will and his recovery. A website has been made available with updated information about the family’s situation at www.caringbridge.org/visit/willsmith12. Notes can be written here for the family to view.

Donations can also be made at this site toward a fund to aid in medical bills. Donations can also be made at Peoples Bank in Gambier in Will’s name.
