MOUNT VERNON — The 2011 Knox County Fair opened officially on Sunday with Ashley Burke singing the national anthem as the flag was raised over the race track infield. Those present for the ceremony included Knox County Commissioners Teresa Bemiller and Roger Reed and members of the 2011 Knox County Senior Fair Board.

Bemiller said she is excited about this year’s fair. She said the fair board has put in a lot of hard work to make sure it is a great event with lots of activities for the entire family. Bemiller also said a county fair is very relevant in the 21st century.

“We are a rural community,” she said. “This fair promotes agriculture which is a big part of our heritage. With all the animal shows, 4-H projects and other exhibits, it gives kids a chance to show what they can do. Hopefully, everyone will come out and enjoy the fair.”

Reed also enthusiastically supports the fair. “It’s an exciting time,” he said. “Besides highlighting agriculture, the junior fair competition helps kids learn to lose graciously and win proudly.”

Reed said he would like to encourage fair attendees to find the fair directors and tell them how much they appreciate the great job the directors have done in preparing for and operating this year’s fair.
