MOUNT VERNON — It was hot and sticky at the 2011 Knox County Fair on Monday, but people still came out to enjoy the rides, food, exhibits and competitions.

At the grandstand, the draft horse and pony hitch classes paraded most of the day, while the junior fair was exceptionally busy with various horse, dairy cattle, sheep, poultry and goat classes competing in the morning and the dog and swine shows set for the evening.

The Demolition Derby drew a crowd to the grandstand in the evening, while the Junior Fair Swine Show was also a popular attraction.

The Swine Show is amazing to watch. The hogs are divided into classes by weight and enter the ring about 15 at a time and mill about the ring, with their handlers trying to keep them in the judge’s vision, so she can see them at various angles and make a judgment. She would pick four or five, then dismiss the rest from the ring and make her final choice, which she would explain to the crowd.
