MOUNT VERNON — Only a few miles of route walking remain for local mail carrier Jon Minard. The 30-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service will put in his last official day of duty Monday, Aug. 1, when he retires from the Mount Vernon Post Office.

Minard enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduating from Linden McKinley High School, serving 17 months of active duty in Vietnam as an infantryman. He received two Purple Hearts after losing the vision in his right eye and after receiving a shot through his right shoulder.

His family later looked to purchase a small farm, and Knox County at the time had attractive prices on land. He then moved to Mount Vernon and was hired on at the Mount Vernon Post Office in 1988, after working for post offices at The Ohio State University and the city of Dublin. Mount Vernon has now been his home for 23 years.
